What does it all mean?
December 16, 2014
Hello again lovely people, today I wanted to talk to y'all about something that had been on my mind a little bit, and that is: Does knowing what a song is about matter? And by that I mean does knowing the exact meaning for a song impact you more as a listener? This comes up because recently someone was asking me about the meaning behind some of my songs, which I think are painfully obvious, but I responded with: “when has knowing that ever made the song have more impact on you?”
Music is one of those things that's so incredibly subjective, where people form a connection that is personal to them in that moment. To pull back the curtain on something like that seems a little unfair. I can think of at least a dozen songs that I have no idea what they are about but I've formed my own meaning for them which makes them mean a lot more to me despite not knowing the intended meaning.
Leaving something open to interpretation lets it become more personal while encouraging debate. For this example ill use probably my favorite book: Notes from the underground. The way it was written left so much up to the reader, along with vague way “he” spoke most of the time, and considering how long ago it was published its no surprise that its still talked about and so little is known about the actual meaning. Mind you I'm in no way comparing myself to Dostoevsky, its just the example used. What am I trying to say with all this? Well I needed a blog and this was all I could come up with AND that there's no reason to look for a meaning in something that speaks to you, all that matters is that it speaks and you listen.
Well that's all for now, I hope to have more to say soon but I've been needing a vacation and I've decided to take it now, kind of... Anyway leave a comment with your thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Until the next time, Mister Scrambles: Over and Out!
