Music trends and how late people can hop on the “band wagon”
December 4, 2014
There are a few music trends that will never go away, and we can accept that there will always be over produced, homogenized, boring, record selling, mind numbing, pathetic excuse for something listenable that plays on every radio station. I accept that. My gripe with music trends are the ones who try and catch a ride on something that is not new, or revolutionary, and had been done before by many better bands. I will be the first to admit that it is hard to be completely original all of or most of the time. But there is no reason for me or anyone else to latch onto a sub-genera that has overstayed its welcome and now seems like a novelty for bands doing that now. Now I'm going to use a case for this as an example but not name the name of the shitty, unoriginal, pathetic, ass-clown band, because I don't want to promote them more cause they already have more praise than they deserve.
Remember back in '99 when the name “Minibosses” Started floating around and people were like, “a band that plays video game music?” the response would be either, “that's killer” or “that fad's gonna be over soon.” If you said the latter you would be wrong. There were a few awesome bands that did this and well for that matter that are still playing and doing VG music different and really made a good impression with the audience, like PowerGlove, and Arm-cannon. The three bands mentioned all did something original in the VG music scene that made them stand apart from the countless others, and for that they deserve all the praise they get.
So lets say a group of people decided to try that now, fifteen years later. Given that time gap there are a lot of people who never heard of the Minibosses, so this concept seems new, original, and brilliant. Well if enough people believe something does that make it true...anyone...NO! IT DOESNT! This happens time and again with every type of music so that's nothing new but one might think this aint the best idea. “Hey that's not cool to criticize that band, I like them that means theyre good!” thanks for the imput but you're wrong. Just because you like something doesn't mean its good, or mean the people doing whatever it is are talented. I'm not saying to only like music made be really talented people, just don't place credit where credit isn't due. Be able to separate what you like from what is good and be able to say “yeah I like this band but theyre not all that good,” but I digress.
As I was saying, 15 years late to the small and hard to find party doesn't constitute enough time passing to have it be cool in the ironic hipster way, of just a good idea in general, especially when considering it's not done well or in a more original way that hasn’t been completely exploited. Lets understand that VG music is more often than not done in the wrong way for a number of reasons. If your VG band has a roster of song taken from day one launch titles of the NES and SNES then just stop. If your VG band plays the songs as close to originally written with Dual recs, drum triggers, and everything tuned down Djent style: Stop. If on your band page the members of said VG band talk about favorite games say “Mario” stop.
I am aware at this point that im giving off a pretentious image of myself, but that's not true. People have the right to listen to whatever they want, but as a band or artist you shouldn't be willing to serve up the same boring, reused, recycled dribble that has be done countless times before but better only because you know there is a market and the people you are targeting are uneducated musically. I guess I cant be too mad at a band that's willing to not give a shit, not try, and that follows a trend that is long gone. Congratulations for finding mediocrity.
I guess my real problem is with said bands fans, those who have no idea this type of VG music has been done before, don't care to look into it, and refuse to hear that it's been done far better by better bands. I could on and on about these people who make my life just a little bit worse, but what good would it do for me in the long run to rant about how these “people” are idiots, half witted morons, whose opinions are invalid and should be shipped off to a place where there is no internet or connection to the outside world? That’s right I dont need to name call and point out the obvious. HA!
When I started writing this I had a point but I've kinda lost it. I guess this is my rant and pissy attitude about getting recognition. I know that the larger market will more often than not gravitate to shitty music and musicians/artists that do something different and original will never be accepted and appreciated. Most people would rather listen to a song that starts as soon as you push play than have to sit through a minute or two intro. I guess I cant really fault that, though it makes me want to pull my hair out cause I can't see it changing, or maybe it's my fault for for making music that's not a mindless remake of something else that's bad to begin with.
I will stop whining for now, as always thanks for listening and leave a comment about anything you like, even if that is to tell me I suck. As always Mister Scrambles: Over and Out!
